Why was the Peninsula Marriage Equality Coalition formed ?
On November 4th, 52% of Californians voted to ban marriage for same sex couples. Anger, disappointment, protest and vigils followed. A group of San Francisco peninsula community members came together to form the Peninsula Marriage Equality Coalition (PMEC), in the belief that each and every one of us can affect change. PMEC felt, that as the judicial appeal process moves forward, it was time to keep the momentum of the No on 8 campaign, and turn it into a Marriage Equality Movement.
By focusing the energy and passion exhibited in the aftermath of the passing of proposition 8, we will obtain Marriage Equality for All!
And, if the judicial process is successful, we must counter act any backlash and protect the judiciary from removal; if the judicial process fails, we will need to implement a foundational process to repeal Prop 8. If the judicial process succeeds, we will still need to be prepared for an inevitable challenge during the next election. In either event, now is the time to begin.
